The VFW Auxiliary has always been about volunteering and helping others. The VFW Auxiliary Outreach Program gives us, the auxiliaries, the opportunity to do more with local communities, civic organizations and many other wonderful organizations and is a way to be more visible while establishing ourselves as strong supporters of our community.
By seeing members, in VFW auxiliary attire, partnered with other groups, at events and programs to benefit the community, we show our belief in sharing our most valuable asset…. our time.
When we volunteer and help other organizations we can engage with others about who we are and what we do. This is a great way to provide information about our programs and attract new members to us who have similar passions as ours. This is a way to invite the outside into our organization.
Here are some ways to find and establish partnerships in your area:
Prepare a letter or introduction to organizations that do community events.
Prepare a flyer that can be posted to your auxiliary pages, or community social media pages. Many need help and volunteers.
Steps to a successful Auxiliary Outreach project:
Partner with organizations that could use assistance, vote and approve a motion to provide that assistance at a meeting, at least one auxiliary member must participate, always wear auxiliary attire a shirt, hat, badge, etc. and of course share what you do and why we do it, and how they can become a part of it if they are eligible.
Suggested Auxiliary Outreach partnerships:
First responders, assist police with child ID kits, EMTS assist with CPR training, Senior Citizens Centers, deliver groceries or meals on wheels, or teach a computer class at a Senior Center, help animal shelters with pets, or cleanup, partner with a food bank or assist in a homeless shelter, contact the Red Cross help with blood drives to assist.
Remember: Events can be held at your Post if the volunteers are there to help that organization. Auxiliary Outreach projects are for non-affiliated with the VFW or Auxiliary programs.
Donations, money or goods are also not reportable under the program.
Hours spent with other organizations you should count!
When individuals of all walks of life weave themselves together for the sake of others, we create a beautiful design of threads or friends and fellowship. This is a special benefit of the Auxiliary Outreach Program.
You can find forms and many helpful items for the Auxiliary Outreach Program behind MALTA Member Resources, Auxiliary Outreach.
If you need help or have questions feel free to call me, we will find an answer together!
